Grinduro Trail Impact Statement

Grinduro California is finally coming to Mt Shasta! Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance (SORA) couldn’t be more excited for the world-class cycling event to commence on Friday, May 20th. We’ve been hard at work making sure Grinduro will showcase our amazing trails, open spaces, and local culture. While we’re pulling out all the stops to ensure a great visitor experience for Grinduro, it’s equally important to us that the event is beneficial for local businesses and community members alike.

As expected for a major cycling event, Mt. Shasta will see an increase in visitors both in town and on our trails. Grinduro is primarily a “gravel” event utilizing our system of Forest Service roads, but there are a couple key sections of Mt. Shasta trails that will be impacted by the race.

Please be sure to visit this link for a collection of comprehensive event routes and please obey all posted signage and trail closures. Here's what you need to know to be prepared for the event:

Friday 5/20; Prologue Ride; 2:30PM –  5:00PM

Due to the casual nature of the Prologue Ride, the route will not be closed to the public. Community members should be aware of increased trail traffic climbing Cub Creek and 10 Gallon, and descending Gateway Trail to the TH on Everitt Hwy during the afternoon hours.  Approximately 2:30PM – 5:00PM.

Saturday 5/21; Main Grinduro and Grindurito Races; 8:00AM – 4:00pm

The following sections of Gateway trails will be closed to the public from 8:00am-2:00pm during the event: Gateway Trail Descending from the Upper Junction to Pig Farm, climbing Tunnel to Marley, descending Gateway to TH on Everitt Hwy.  The Lake Siskiyou trail will also be a part of the course, but is not timed and will not be closed.  Community members should be aware of increased trail traffic through the middle of the day and afternoon.  Approximately 8:00AM – 4:00PM.

SORA is committed to making sure our prized (and hard-earned) community trails are in just as good of a condition after the event as they are now. To prepare for the trail impact of Grinduro, SORA has facilitated conversations with local stakeholders and land managers, including the US Forest Service, Siskiyou County Flood Control and Water Management District, Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District, the Mt. Shasta Trail Association, Bike Shasta, Trail Labs, and other involved and concerned community members.

SORA’s newest program Siskiyou Stewardship Corps (SSC) has partnered with the Forest Service for pre- and post-event inspections of the trails in the Gateway area. We have noted locations of special concern–where course marking can be maximized to reduce user-created shortcuts–and a post-race inspection of the course will be promptly conducted after the race concludes. Depending on the amount of work needed to get the trails back in tip-top shape, we will either host a volunteer day or use proceeds from the event to pay for trail work.

Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance is proud of our trails and is committed to maintaining their high quality. We look forward to hosting Grinduro to prove what we already know: Mt. Shasta’s trails and open spaces are deserving of world class events, which can create a positive experience for the entire community and strengthen our local outdoor recreation culture.
