Sustainable Recreation - draft report
SORA is excited to share the draft South Siskiyou State of Recreation Needs Assessment Report - take a look at what our communities have to say about recreation
In mid-September 2024 we shared the South Siskiyou Sustainable Recreation Plan Engagement Summary and this week we are excited to bring you the draft State of Recreation Needs Assessment Report. You can learn more about the project, the process and the timeline for community input and the final report on SORA’s website.
Our goal in sharing these documents is to give community members ample time to review and consider these documents in preparation for winter meetings at which you can share your thoughts and input.
Some of what you’ll find in the State of Recreation Needs Assessment are a list of current projects, some stats about participation in different recreation activities, a broad list of recreation stakeholders and their goals, comments about what’s working and what’s challenging, and case studies that are relevant to us in South Siskiyou.
State of Recreation Themes and Opportunities:
The following infrastructure and facility-related themes represent a starting point for further research, recommendation development, and community engagement as the project continues:
Wayfinding and connection building—creation and reinforcement of connections between trailheads, recreation areas, and towns.
Trail, trailhead, and campground development around Weed, Dunsmuir, and McCloud. Mt Shasta area features the majority of the official trail networks and recreation destinations in the area.
Plan and develop active transportation connections between Mt Shasta, McCloud, Weed, and Dunsmuir and more recreational options that connect each community.
Develop on-street bike connections to major bike trailheads, such as the Gateway Trailhead, to reduce the need for parking and reduce traffic on local roadways.
Consider roadway maintenance and other needs on key access roads, such as Castle Lake Road and Everitt Memorial Highway.
Access issues exist at some regional destinations, such as Mossbrae Falls.
We appreciate you taking the time to read through these documents. Please keep an eye out for an email that announces public meeting dates later in the winter.
