Get your hands dirty on a multi-year restoration project on the Sisson Callahan National Recreation Trail
Siskiyou Outdoor Recreation Alliance is taking part in a really cool trail restoration project on the Sisson Callahan trail this fall – and you can too!
The Watershed Research & Training Center out of Hayfork has funding for trail restoration, realignment, and maintenance work on the Sisson Callahan National Recreation Trail with a focus this fall on the portion from Forest Service Road 17 to Robbers Meadows (near Kangaroo Lake). The Watershed Center trail crew has been out for a multi-week hitch, with a Forest Service crews joining in, to do trail realignments away from meadows and to better mark the trail.
On Saturday, Sept 14th, volunteers are asked to come out to clear the trail of brush and overgrowth on the section from Forest Service Road 17 (the IP road) up the trail towards Bull Lake. We’ll meet at the Parks Creek Trailhead at 9am, then carpool down to the spot where the trail crosses the road. The plan is to get started with trail work around 10am and wrap up by 2 or 3 pm. Be sure to come prepared for the weather, bring water and lunch, bring gloves, wear your works boots and appropriate clothing.
If you’re coming from Redding or Weaverville, to get to the Parks Creek Trailhead, plan for around 2 hours drive time or a bit less than an hour if you’re coming from Mt. Shasta. The Watershed Center can reimburse volunteers for their gas. There are swimming holes nearby, as well as camping opportunities if you want to make a weekend of it.
The Watershed Center will be doing work on the Sisson Callahan in 2024 and 2025. They’ve walked the trail with Forest Service staff to identify projects that fulfill the priorities of protecting wet meadows, clearing the trail of brush and fallen trees and marking it to help orient users. This mighty organization out of Hayfork just made a big investment in the area near this part of the trail (more to follow through the Watershed Center’s social media).
SORA is very excited at this opportunity to restore a beautiful historic trail with the experienced, capable crew at the Watershed Center.
